You can lock every door in the building and still get robbed through an open window. Unapproved AI tools — the ones employees sign up for on their own — are those open windows. Security teams call it Shadow AI, and most organizations have far more of it than they think.
Why Shadow AI is so dangerous
Every unsanctioned tool is an invisible export channel for your data. There's no logging, no policy, and no way to know what left the building until it's already gone.
Close the windows
- Give people a sanctioned, genuinely useful AI option so they don't wander.
- Inventory the tools already in use across teams.
- Explain why "just this once" is exactly how leaks begin.
Shadow AI thrives when the approved path is worse than the workaround. Offer one secure gateway that beats the free tools, and the windows close on their own.
